William "Bill"
Hardy Owens
October 12, 1939 – June 13, 2025
William Hardy "Bill" Owens, 85, passed away peacefully at Washington Mercy Medical Center on June 13, 2025. Born on October 12, 1939,in Holcomb, Missouri, Bill was the beloved son of John S. Owens and Lorene (Shipman) Owens. He graduated from Holcomb High School and went on to earn a degree in accounting from the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou) where he met many lifelong friends. He also proudly spent time in the U.S. Army Reserves.
In October 1966, Bill married the love of his life, Flora "Carolyn" Mays. Their partnership lasted for thirty-four years until Carolyn's passing in 2001.
Bill began his professional career with Ralston Purina before joining Tomboy Wholesalers and eventually Save-A-Lot, where he dedicated the remainder of his career. He retired in 1999 as Executive Vice President of Warehousing & Safety, leaving behind legacy of leadership, loyalty and friendship.
Bill was a man who truly embraced people. His generous spirit and compassionate nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He found joy in planning birthday celebrations for fellow residents at the nursing home, always ready to brighten someone's day. Bill was willing to open his wallet for those in need, never asking for anything in return.
He had a wide array of passions-he was an avid fan of Elvis, barbeque, Sudoku puzzles, Matlock, blackjack, horse and greyhound racing, the stock market, and cheered faithfully for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Missouri Tigers.
Above all, Bill treasured time with his children and grandchildren. His most cherished role was that of loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, John C. Owens (Julie): daughters, Rebecca A. Brickel, Donna L. Owens (Michael), and Susan R. Ross (Scott); and grandchildren Max, Hannah, Lily, William, Kaitlyn, Delaney, Jackson and Evan.
