Obituary

Enola Jane Shepard, 93, passed away at her home, Sunday, May 8, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was born December 12, 1928 in Burdette, Arkansas to James Edgar and Verna T. Hoover Self. As a very young child, the family moved to Kennett, Missouri. She married Melvin Arley Shepard at First Baptist Church, October 1, 1947. After residing in Kennett, and raising their children, they moved in 1980 to a small farm close to Piggott, Arkansas. When her husband passed away in 2015, she moved to Fort Smith to be closer to her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and three brothers, Vernon, Bradley, and George Self, and their wives.

Her survivors include one son, James Edward (Becky) Shepard, Fort Smith, and daughter, Jane Shepard (Larry) Byrd, Springdale, Arkansas; four grandsons, Matt (Toni) Shepard, Willis, Texas, Thad (Kerry) Shepard, Memphis, Tennessee, Jared Byrd, Springdale, Arkansas, and Will (Laurie) Shepard, Collierville, Tennessee; and four great-grandsons, Brock, Cooper, Wade and Kirby Shepard, and five great-granddaughters, Savannah, Caroline and Taylor Shepard, and Ryan and Camryn Byrd.

A brother, Donald Gene (Jerrolyn) Self of Sikeston, Missouri, and sister Lavell (Fred) Neal of Rhome, Texas, and many other relatives and dear friends also survive.

She was a Christian and member of Rye Hill Baptist Church, Fort Smith, as well as Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution. She especially enjoyed her service for several years as a member of the Piggott Community Hospital Auxiliary (Pink Ladies) and attending state meetings in Little Rock. Later in life she flew to Honduras with her Hitts Chapel (Piggott) church group on several mission trips.

Favorite pastimes included gardening and having beautiful flowers inside her home, making quilts for her family and friends, WINNING rummy games, and most of all, being with her family.
