Anita Beth Blackmon, daughter of the late Vernell and Nadine Byrd (Vancil), was born April 9, 1938 in Holcomb, MO, and departed this life on her 88th birthday, April 9, 2026.
Anita was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Jim Blackmon.
After graduating from Holcomb High School in 1955, Anita continued her education at the University of Missouri - Columbia, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education. Anita's 35 years in public education included the Lindburgh, Holcomb, and Kennett school districts. At the beginning of her career, she traveled to Texas for a short music educator's course at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and met Jim. Anita and Jim were married on January 29, 1966.
Her career in education spanned all ages of students, from elementary music to high school band. She also gave private piano lessons to many students for 60 years, providing them with opportunities to participate in the National Federation of Music Club's Junior Music Festival each year.
Anita was an active member of the Azalea Garden Club in Kennett. She coordinated and judged Delta Fair competitions, provided flower arrangements for many activities and churches, traveled to and supported botanical gardens around the country, and enjoyed her own garden. She especially looked forward to the Rose Show each year at the fair.
Anita was a member of First Baptist Church in Kennett since 1966. She was also an active member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and looked forward to their luncheons.
Survivors include:
Two Brothers: Van Byrd and Glenda of White Oak, Missouri.
Eddie Byrd and Dawn of Cordova, Tennessee.
Nieces and Nephews: Cindy Byrd Chance and Bart of Medford, OK (Brimley)
Melissa Byrd of Vero Beach, FL.
Sara Byrd Griffin and Thomas of Huntsville, AL (Davis, Merrick, and Millie)
One brother-in-law: Gary Blackmon and Jean of Waco, Texas
